How do you choose your lotto numbers? Do you use memorable dates, such as family birthdays or important anniversaries in your lottery selections? What we need is a method of randomly generating lottery numbers from personalized data, not just birthdays and anniversaries! A possible solution is to consider the properties of numbers that we were all taught in High School.

We are all familiar with the decimal number system that consists of digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 inclusive. If we divide any number by 10 we generate a remainder that can be any number from 0 through to 9 respectively. Obviously, if a number is divisible by 10 such as 30 or 70 then division by 10 generates a remainder of 0. Any number not divisible by 10 will generate a unique remainder between 1 and 9 inclusive. Consider a 6/49 lotto draw, such as the UK National Lottery. We are required to select 6 numbers from a possible 49. How do we generate lotto numbers from any number? Simply, divide the number by 49 to generate a unique remainder between 0 and 48. Now any number divisible by 49, generates a remainder of 0 which corresponds to lotto ball 49, whilst a remainder between 1 and 48 corresponds to lotto balls 1 through to 48 respectively.

In this way we can generate a unique lotto number from any random number for any lotto draw played anywhere in the world.
